From the College Board  Course & Exam Description

"Through AP courses, students learn to think critically, construct solid arguments, and see many sides of an issue—skills that prepare them for college and beyond. Taking AP courses demonstrates to college admission officers that students have sought the most challenging curriculum available to them, and research indicates that students who score a 3 or higher on an AP Exam typically experience greater academic success in college and are more likely to earn a college degree than non-AP students...Most four-year colleges and universities in the United States grant credit, advanced placement, or both on the basis of successful AP Exam scores.
AP Biology is an introductory college-level biology course. Students cultivate their understanding of biology through inquiry-based investigations as they explore the following topics: evolution, cellular processes, energy and communication, genetics, information transfer, ecology, and interactions.

College Course Equivalent -
The AP Biology course is equivalent to a two-semester college introductory biology course for biology majors.

Prerequisites -
Students should have successfully completed high school courses in biology and chemistry.

Laboratory Requirement -
This course requires that 25 percent of the instructional time will be spent in hands-on laboratory work, with an emphasis on inquiry-based investigations that provide students with opportunities to apply the science practices."
